Have you ever thought of visiting the states like UP and Haryana in vacations, just to enjoy the place and its beauty? Obviously not, but I am sure you may have a desire to visit Goa and Himachal Pradesh once in your life. All these are parts of India, but still a wide difference among them. Ever wondered, why?
Let me explain you the whole story starting from a fact! A study has revealed that the perception of living in a beautiful place is strongly correlated with happiness, even more than things like safety and cleanliness. By 2030, 70% of the population of India is expected to live in urban areas that simply tell that we pretty much all have to live in cities one day. There is no mystery behind why we like to visit Chandigarh more than any other district of Haryana. There is a scientific approach supporting the fact that actually makes the difference.
There are six fundamental things a city needs to get right to make it beautiful and attractive.
Order and Symmetry
Symmetry, balance and repetition are pleasing to humans, but excess of it makes them feel alien. For a beautiful residential area in cities, every house should have same width and height allowing an orderly framework in which individual buildings can vary in form and color.
A Street full of activity, children playing around, people walking, attractive shops and parks would obviously be the first choice for anybody who wants to buy a new house, rather than a city with industrial zones and office buildings.
It is very importance to intensify the use of space in the city with higher residential densities and centralization, to give a perfect shape to “city of short distance”, that can provide all the required infrastructure facilities within the walkable distance.
Orientation and mystery
A perfect balance of big and small streets that doesn’t prioritize vehicles over humans and allows easy navigation to both humans as well as vehicles, gives the city a mysterious beauty.
Our cities are largely hijacked by the commercial interests that hog the air space, building large towers and buildings. The ideal human scale is five stories high, unless what it stands for is really worth more air space.
A sense of the local tradition
A city should be a sign of its localness by the usage of locally sourced materials and build architecture that is born from the specific culture, climate, history, and social traditions of a given place, in order to reduce the deadening sameness of the cities.
I am not under any illusion that what I have been advocating will ever see the light of day. My purpose of writing this is to tell you a way to make your city, a desired place for everyone to visit.
I am sure you must have many more ideas which can be an enhancer for the beauty of a city, please do write in and share your ideas.
