1. Association of Lakshmi with Diwali

Goddess Lakshmi also known goddess of wealth incarnated on the new moon day(Amavasya) in the month of Kartik. So basically, we celebrate her birthday and keep a pooja for her blessings.

2. Goddess Lakshmi was rescued by lord Vishnu

Lord vishnu in his fifth incarnation as Vaman-avtaara rescued Lakshmi from the from the prison of King Bali and this is another reason of worshipping Ma Laksmi on Diwali.

3. The demon king Narakaasur was killed

Before Diwali Lord Krishna killed Narakaasur and rescued 16,000 women from his captivity. And the celebration of this victory went for 2 days including the Diwali.

4. The Victory of Rama

This something that ever hindu knows, about the epic Ramayana that Lord Ram, Sita and Lakshman returned to Ayodhya after conquering Lanka and defeating Ravana.

5. The Return of Pandavas.

In this same period the pandavas returned after getting expelled from their community as they were defeated by Kauravas.

6. Vikramaditya was crowned.

He was one of the greatest Hindu King and was crowned and hence even this is one main reason for Diwali.

7. Special day for Arya samaj.

Arya Samaj was found on new moon day of Kartik (Diwali day) by Maharishi Dayananda.

8. Special day for the Sikhs.

In 1577, the foundation stone of golden temple at Amritsar was laid on Diwali.
