As per the local legend, the skeletons belong to more than 300 pilgrims, including a king of Kannauj and his pregnant wife, who were travelling to Nanda Devi shrine. As they reached the lake, the queen gave birth to her child. Upset by childbirth on sacred land Goddess Nanda Devi sent a terrible hailstorm with large hailstones on them and they all perished as they had no place to hide.
